Carry the Meek by Ham Sandwich (Route 109)
The Kells combo with the unlikely moniker, for whom
the term ‘pop/rock’ might have been coined,
spring into the public domain fully formed, on this
their classy debut. The evocative, well-structured
songs are given extra resonance by the unobvious combinings
of the two lead vocalists’ harmonisations, Niamh
Farrell’s New Wave chanteuse meets Spectoresque
girl group timbre perfectly counterpointed by Podge
McNamee’s mannered baritone, reminiscent as
it is of voices like Cathal Coughlan’s, Stephen
Merritt’s, even Neil Hannon’s. Live long,
and prosper.
