The Golden Age by American Music Club (Cooking Vinyl)
‘Laid back’, ‘mellow’, even
‘happy’, might be the adjectives to characterise
Mark Eitzel’s and Vudi’s new record (for
they are the only original AMC members who remain).
‘Amorphous’ would be another good epithet
to employ when trying to get your head around Eitzel’s
latest batch of songs. ‘The Windows on the World’
is this writer’s favourite, for its woozily
drunken recalling of some of Eitzel’s former
character-driven glories, like ‘Johnny Mathis’
Feet’, from 1993’s Mercury. Understated
in comparison with 2004’s Love Songs For
Patriots, but still rewarding for its sentimental
candour.
